House Sitting Taranaki

Midway between Auckland and Wellington on the west coast of the North Island, Taranaki looks out into the Tasman Sea.

A huge magnificent volcanic cone with a snowy peak is visible from afar, this is known as Mt Taranaki. The volcano is not the only reason to travel to this region, the world-famous and beloved surfer beaches also attract many people.

The regions Egmont National Park, which includes the volcanic mountain and the country surrounding it, attracts many hikers and tourists alike. The foothills of the mountain are covered by magnificent rainforest. The higher you go, the more varied the landscape. This national park is covered from large low elevation rimu and kamahi trees through dense sub alpine shrubs to an alpine herb patch with some plants unique to this park.

New Plymouth is the largest city in the Taranaki region with around 80,000 inhabitants. A good base for exploring the area, the city is in the west of the North Island and is halfway between Auckland and Wellington. Maori tribes settled here centuries before the first Europeans arrived in New Zealand. Founded in 1841 by European settlers, it is one of the oldest cities in New Zealand.
