New Plymouth, halfway between Auckland and Wellington, is the largest city in the Taranaki region with around 80,000 inhabitants.
The 2,518 meter high Taranaki – also known as Mount Egmont – is the symbol of the whole region. Taranaki Volcano has a perfect cone shape, which is why it became famous as the “Double” of Mount Fuji in the Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai. The region is a paradise for hikers: there are trails on and around the mountain that last from around 30 minutes to 4-5 days. It is possible to walk around the entire mountain in this time, but be prepared for the changeable weather that Taranaki is notorious for. Since you don’t need ice or climbing equipment to climb the mountain in the summer months, it is also the most climbed peak in New Zealand.
Numerous roads lead around the mountain, the sight of which is simply fantastic – when it sticks its head out of the clouds. However, a halo of clouds often surrounds the peak, giving it a mystical appearance that fits the Maori legend of its formation.
Not far away is the Art Gallery, which houses one of Australasia’s most important collections of contemporary art. A real eye-catcher in New Plymouth is the 45 meter high sculpture “Wind Wand” (wind rod) on the waterfront. The city is also known for its numerous gardens. A visit to the botanical garden is definitely worth it. With a bit of luck you can be at one of the numerous garden festivals in the city, such as the Rhododendron Festival, because then some private individuals even open their gardens for viewing.
