The narrow strip of land between the Southern Alps of the South Island and the Tasman Sea is known as the West Coast region. This region is the entry point to five of New Zealand’s 13 national parks and encompasses the largest area of protected land of any region in New Zealand. Greymouth is the capital of the West Coast and the terminus of the Tranz Alpine railway journey from Christchurch Hokitika is the other major center of this area, the hub of the early gold rush. Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier Bases for Glacier Detours Haast offers a number of local attractions worth breaking the journey from Queenstown or Wanaka.
