We are a one minute drive from the beach (Cockle Bay beach) in Auckland.
Dates are flexible. If the birds are a deal breaker we can get a local teenager to feed them.
Our house is two storied, though you enter via the top storey and then go downstairs via internal stairs.
It is newly renovated. New bathroom just completed. Our kitchen is almost complete (it has sink, dishwasher, insinkerator, plug in hot plate, plug in slow cooker, plug in air fryer, microwave, fridge). The oven/stove top are not installed but we could install this in time for you.
Upstairs we have three bedrooms, open plan lounge/kitchen with butler’s pantry, hallway, separate toilet, bathroom with vanity, additional toilet, and shower. As you walk through kitchen there are stairs leading downstairs. Downstairs is a larger lounge and another bedroom. There is a sliding door outside, leading into the catio and aviary area. Our catio is a sizeable chunk of the lawn (we have a 1300m2 property) contained with bird netting. It is anti climb but open sky. Currently the grass inside the catio is long because that is fun for the cats. Our lawn guy mows the rest of the massive lawn and keeps it tidy. The cats like to watch our aviary birds – two yellow bibbed loris and in a different aviary, two love birds. I think the love birds are about to nest and raise young (they do this unaided). Update: They’ve laid eggs!!!
Our cats are an adult male Maine coon, an adult female ragdoll, and a young ragdoll (8 months by the time you visit). Their names are Gandalf, Violet, and Ava. Gandalf is very chill (and massive). Violet is rather grumpy. She likes to sleep on beds at night though so hopefully you’re not allergic. Ava is very sweet and gets on well with Gandalf. They give each other baths. Violet doesn’t really like anyone (but she won’t scratch you – she likes to grumpily meow).
Important: you can’t be afraid of birds. The loris are in mating season so the male is mean. Daily in morning = lorikeet powder (it comes in a big bag) + cut up apple with no seeds. They also require their water to be topped up daily as they dirty it with their powdered food. You’ll be able to largely avoid them as we will attach their bowls to the wire by the door.
The lovebirds are easier. Once a week I replace their seed bowl with a fresh bowl of seed. I also replace their water dispenser that I keep on the floor of the aviary. They will not bite you because they fly away. You have to check the water every other day (just look at it) to check it hasn’t accidentally drained out – maybe you put it on a slanted surface.
The cats eat dry biscuits, available 24/7. No wet food. We also have water available. We keep a litter box inside but they don’t really use it as they go outside in catio/grass area.
Your main job is to love the cats as they will miss us.
Gandalf (Maine coon) and Ava (baby ragdoll) cannot go outside. They have never been outside cats. (The catio is fine.)
Violet is allowed outside but must be inside at night. They go into the catio at night, through the cat door. That is fine.
Your bedroom will be upstairs (with a TV in it). Netflix etc.
We have a washing machine and dryer.
If you have an issue with taxidermy, we will not be the best house to house sit, as my husband is a taxidermist (birds). But he practices ethical taxidermy. You will need to run the dehumidifier every now and then for the taxidermy to be in a moisture free environment.
The house has near new carpet, brand new laminate flooring upstairs, fresh paint throughout, etc. Outside is a little wild but neat enough (we pay a lawn guy to come and do the lawns) because we have been prioritising the renovation.
It will be nice and clean for you.
